Jesus' mother stands as an example of motherhood for all ages. She showed herself to be a good mother. There are many things about a good mother that reminds us of the gospel of Jesus.
I. A good mother's love is sacrificial. When everyone and everything else fails, our mothers will be there for us. They go into the "valley of the shadow of death" to bring us into the world. II. A good Mother's love is unconditional. Mothers love us even when are unlovable, and even when we sin and err, Just As Jesus did. John 3:16 comes to mind. III. A good mother's love causes her to discipline us as God does. It is not a good mother who fails to discipline us, for discipline is a form of love. 2 Corinthians 12:6-8 IV. A good mother's love is unchanging. The get angry with us, but good mothers do not give up on their children, nor do they cease loving them. There are probably other ways that a good mother's love is like the gospel, but these should suffice to give us a better view of a good mother and a good God as well. Bro. Joe

I am sermonizing along with you in this sermon. It know that there is some preaching on these two women for Mother's Day. Here is what I have come up with.
I. They were women of great faith. Their faith was sincere. (unfeigned) Their faith was strong enough to impress Paul and to have influence in Timothy's life. II. They were women of great courage. Since their faith stood out, they were bound to be targets of those who persecuted Christians. No doubt, they were outspoken about their faith, which took courage. III. They were grounded in the word of God and lived it. Their names are not mentioned in 2 Timothy 3:15, but "from a child" Timothy had known the scriptures. They took the time to read and study the word and to make sure that their son and grandson. Los and Eunice are good examples for both men and women, and we can learn from them how to live the Christian life. Note: I haven't put much here, but there is a lot that can be said about each point. I hope and pray that you can use it. Bro. Joe When God wanted to show His love for Israel, He compared it to a mother's love and comfort. Paul wanted to remind Timothy of his conversion and calling, so Paul reminded him of his upbringing by his grandmother and mother (2 Timothy 1:5). Mothers are the first people that we need, and the first to care for us. Using our holy imaginations, we can compare a mother's love and care to the gospel - the gospel according to mother.
I. Consider a mother's love and gospel love. A. Nobody loves us like Jesus, but from the earthly perspective no one loves like a good mother. For example, think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, at the foot of the cross, loving Him to the end. B. Let's look at some comparisons between a mother's love and gospel love. 1. A mother's love is sacrificial. (She goes into the valley of death to give birth to us.) That reminds us of Jesus going to the cross to give us new birth. 2. A mother's love is disciplined. I can't speak for your mother, but I can speak for mine. She tau ght me themeaning of discipline and administered it often. In thesame way, Jesus disciplines us. 3. A mother's love, like Christ's love, is unbiased - all inclusive. a. An example of this is Susannah Wesley, John Wesley's mother. She had 18 children and spent in prayer and Bible study with each of them. b. This illustrates gospel love: "He is not willing that any should perish..." C. God loves you with a love deeper even than your mother's. II. Consider a mother's care and God's care for us. A. Care during infancy: 1. An infant would die without mother - totally dependent. 2. We need all of Christ's care. He has promised this care if we will come to Him. B. When we were hurt, we ran to mother. It is the same with Jesus: Matthew 11:28-30. C. Any son or daughter is grateful for the love and care of a good mother. How much more should we be grateful for God's love and care for us? III. Consider a mother's faithfulness and God's faithfulness. A. A good mother will stand by her childdren. 1. This does not mean that they will uphold us in wrong, but will set us straight. 2. Jesus does not uphold us in wrong, but He is faithful to forgive. 1 John 1:9 B. Our Lord is faithful to us. He stands with us in life. We are never far from His love and care. C. God is faithful to you. Are you faithful to Him? I hope that this comparison between motherhood and the Chritian gospel will help this day have greater meaning for you. Appreciate your mother, and do not fail to magnify God in your life. Allow your knowledge of a mother's love to lead you to a deeper experience of God's love. |
